HIPAA Network
The HIPAA Network at Temple University provides a secure environment for transmitting and storing sensitive health information in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This network is specifically configured to support systems and users working with Protected Health Information (PHI), ensuring data is encrypted, access is restricted, and activity is monitored in accordance with federal regulations and university policies. All devices and services connected to this network must adhere to strict security standards, including managed endpoints, limited internet access, and regular compliance audits.
Access to the HIPAA Network is provided exclusively through the HIPAA VPN, which creates a persistent, encrypted tunnel between the user's device and the secure HIPAA environment. The HIPAA VPN is always connected on approved devices, protecting PHI in transit and maintaining a secure session throughout use. Users must log in using Temple credentials and two-factor authentication (2FA) and must use a university-managed device that complies with required security configurations. This setup ensures HIPAA-related research, documentation, and communication remain secure and compliant at all times.
HIPAA VPN accounts are only available to approved individuals who need access to HIPAA-protected resources that are not accessible through general VPN access. To request a HIPAA VPN account, submit a ticket through the TUhelp website and specify the resource you need to access and the justification for access.
