Best Practices for Creating Canvas Courses with Multiple Instructors

Below please find the Best Practices for creating Canvas course shells, to prevent duplicate course shells from being created in the Canvas Course Tools application:

1.      Only the primary instructor of record is responsible for creating the course shell in Canvas from the Canvas Course Tools option on the left side Canvas menu. This will allow the enrollment to populate that Canvas course shell on the next sync with Banner.

However, if additional instructors are listed for a course in Banner, these instructors WILL ALSO SEE the course show up in their Canvas Course Tools.

It is imperative that the primary instructor communicates with all secondary instructors of the multi-instructor course if they all are listed in Banner, that they are not to create the course shell via Canvas Course Tools.

3.      Instructors can easily add additional instructors and TAs in the Canvas course shell by going to the “People” left side menu item in the course.

4.      If this Canvas course will act as the main shell for multiple sections of this course, the additional section CRNs can then be added via the Canvas Course Tools  by the primary instructor.

Canvas and banner will sync 4 times a day. On the next sync cycle after a course when an instructor is added or changed, the course will become active in the Course Tools area of Canvas listed on that CRN course from banner.
